Ego Is Subdued in the Name of Service

The pastime of the demigods making a truce with the asuras powerfully reveals the devotee’s willingness to subdue personal ego for Krishna’s satisfaction. Even when Krishna sent His devotees to negotiate with asuras, there was no hesitation, resentment, or demand for honour. This is a sharp contrast to material consciousness, where compromise is seen as weakness. In devotional life, however, humility is strength — because it is aligned with Krishna’s will.

This principle deeply challenges our conditioned tendency to equate self-worth with position, recognition, or control. True seva-bhāva means serving the intention of Krishna, not protecting ones own identity. Just like Garuda leaves from the scene of Samudra Manthan as soon as Lord Narayana descends in order to prevent Vasuki from becoming afraid, or devotees stepping back when their presence causes insecurity, service sometimes means disappearing gracefully. Being asked to withdraw does not mean rejection — it means alignment.
